Abstracted PortraitStudents learn about abstract art and artists such as: Picasso & the cubism movement, Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky, and Piet Mondrian. They learn about how abstraction can be a simplification or an exaggeration of the world around them. Students used a photoshop filter (cutout) to abstract a portrait for their project. They were able to choose the medium they used to create it out of:
Charcoal Colored Pencils Watercolor CP Oil or Chalk Pastel Pencil Prismacolor Marker |
For this project students learn the process of "stretching" their own canvas. They build the canvas with stretcher bars, raw canvas and apply numerous coats of gesso to prime the canvas. Once it is finished, students do a painting on the canvas of their choosing. Some students choose to paint a photograph they have taken, but the subject mater is left up to them.
